Ipiales · Nariño
Ipiales is the last Colombian city before Ecuador and the gateway to Las Lajas Sanctuary. Backpackers, couples, cyclists, motorbikers, pilgrims and border-crossers all pass through.
Xantico is the pause on that route: a house in the centre with a courtyard, plants, art and people who help you sort out the next leg.
Travel without barriers, travel free.
The courtyard
The courtyard is the heart of Xantico: a wall of green foliage radiating from the sign, the blue ping-pong table, colourful chairs and balconies with hanging plants. This is where tomorrow’s route gets planned, coffee gets shared and road stories get told.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Las Lajas, a neo-Gothic church built between 1916 and 1949, rises over the Guáitara river canyon, very close to Ipiales.
By taxi from Ipiales the ride takes 10 to 15 minutes.
By shared transport: Expreso Las Lajas leaves from the Ipiales bus terminal and from its office at Carrera 6 # 3-118.
The last stretch is on foot, about 1 km, on a path with or without stairs. Coming back means climbing: the official guide mentions 263 steps.

Ipiales is the last Colombian city before Ecuador. The Rumichaca International Bridge, opened in 1972, is about 3 km from central Ipiales and 7 km from Tulcán.
Before you leave, check the requirements to exit Colombia and enter Ecuador on the official sites: they depend on your nationality and can change.
The bridge is about 3 km from the centre. Ask us how to get there from the hostel at your time of day.
Keep your documents handy and allow time for immigration formalities on both sides.

The “city of green clouds” sits at about 2,900 m. Walk the centre, try Nariño’s cooking and let the cold give you an excuse for another cup of coffee.
Start at Parque 20 de Julio: according to the hostel’s directions, Xantico is nearby, opposite the Colpatria building.
Try Nariño’s food: cuy, fritada and empanadas de añejo. In El Charco, cuy is slow-roasted on rotating drums.
Dress warmly: the city’s average temperature is around 12 °C.
Art in the house
On the stairs, a huge mural paints the word Nariño in red on cobalt blue, among black-and-white stripes and pink, yellow and blue flowers.
It is the biggest artwork in the house, but not the only one: framed pictures in the hallways, the chalkboard wall in the lounge and plants in every corner.
The chalkboard wall
Where every guest arrives as a traveller and leaves as a friend.
A real scene: in the lounge, a whole chalkboard wall fills up with messages, drawings and signatures from people who passed through. “Travellers arrive, stories stay.”
