Visit Las Lajas

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Las Lajas, a neo-Gothic church built between 1916 and 1949, rises over the Guáitara river canyon, very close to Ipiales.

  1. By taxi from Ipiales the ride takes 10 to 15 minutes. (Source: laslajas.org )

  2. By shared transport: Expreso Las Lajas leaves from the Ipiales bus terminal and from its office at Carrera 6 # 3-118. (Source: laslajas.org )

  3. The last stretch is on foot, about 1 km, on a path with or without stairs. Coming back means climbing: the official guide mentions 263 steps. (Source: laslajas.org )

  4. The cable car crosses the canyon over roughly 1,400–1,500 m and does not reach the sanctuary itself. Check current hours and fares with the operator. (Source: laslajas.org )

  • Comfortable shoes for the stairs
  • A jacket: the canyon gets cold too
  • A local attraction, not a Xantico tour

Border

Rumichaca, towards Ecuador

The Rumichaca International Bridge, opened in 1972, is about 3 km from central Ipiales and 7 km from Tulcán, according to the Ipiales municipality.

Requirements to leave Colombia and enter Ecuador depend on your nationality and change over time. Before you travel, always check the official pages:

City

Ipiales on foot and at the table

The municipality calls it the “city of green clouds”. It sits at about 2,900 m with an average temperature around 12 °C: Colombia Travel describes it as the country’s highest city, where it is often very cold.

According to the hostel’s directions, Xantico is near Parque 20 de Julio, in the centre. For food, the Nariño government suggests cuy, fritada and empanadas de añejo; in El Charco, cuy is slow-roasted on rotating drums and there are more than 4,000 m² of murals.

With more days, Cumbal volcano and La Bolsa lagoon are among the region’s attractions (Colombia Travel). Ask us about transport.

Getting here and away

Pasto, airports and the terminal

  • Pasto is about 80 km away (Ipiales municipality); by road it takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours (laslajas.org).

  • Ipiales has a small airport with infrequent services to Bogotá; more regular flights leave from Pasto (Colombia Travel). According to the hostel, Pasto’s Antonio Nariño airport is about 74 km away.

  • If you arrive by bus, the Ipiales bus terminal is the starting point for Las Lajas and the rest of the country. See how to reach the hostel from there. Getting here →
